Initiative Toolkit
Over its life the Initiative built dozens of tools for many different purposes and settings. They are shared here as open material, so that schools and districts of any size can put them to use.
The people who made them include teachers, facilitators, coaches and others who gave their time and judgement to the work. They range from big picture planning instruments to short protocols that a team can run in a single meeting. Each can be adapted to local conditions. Expand a heading below to see what it contains.
A concise statement of the elements that define the Initiative's approach to school design and improvement. Useful as a shared reference when a design team is first forming, and as a check on whether a plan has kept its centre.
The full catalogue of tools and protocols used by School Change Coaches, cross referenced to the four strands of the School Change Rubric. The catalogue has its own page, where each tool is listed with a short description of its purpose.
Guidance for schools and districts explaining a redesign to families, staff and the wider community. It covers how to frame the case for change, how to keep messages consistent, and how to handle the questions that inevitably follow.
A set of materials for examining equity openly and practically. They include a historical timeline that asks teams to look back in order to move forward, structured areas for equity discussion, reading on oppression and education, a constructivist listening protocol, and material on relational trust in schools.
The foundational instrument of the Initiative, available in a condensed form for quick reference and as a full self assessment for teams working through it in depth. Its four strands are described under Foundations.
A planning and implementation guide for running a site visit, with an accompanying appendix. Designed for teams visiting another school to learn from it, and for schools preparing to host visitors.
